The STEPS Volunteer Programme is a nationwide community of volunteer engineers who inspire young people to enjoy and explore engineering.

Volunteering is a great way to give back. Yes, it is challenging - but it is very rewarding. And it is a fun way gain CPD credits!

The role of the STEPS Volunteer Engineer is to visit a 3rd or 4th class primary school class taking part in the STEPS Young Engineers Award. Engineers attend a training session in October (held nationwide), where they are given resources and guidance to carry out the school visit. School visits take place the last week in November.

STEPS has been awarded the 'Investing in Volunteers' certification - this is the gold standard for Volunteer Programes in the UK and Ireland.

The certification was re-accredited in 2019. STEPS is the only engineer-focused volunteering organisation to achieve this standard in Ireland.

STEPS Volunteer Engineers carry out a school visit to classes taking part in the STEPS Young Engineers Award.

School visits take place on the last week in November (25th - 30th). This is the ideal window for the visit as the students should have completed their engineering projects and are ready to present their project to the visiting Volunteer Engineer. Equally the students are familiar with the concept of engineering and can fully engage with the Volunteer Engineer.

For 2019 STEPS have designed brand new customised resources for the school visit. The Volunteer Engineer will receive a Volunteer Pack with the resources nescessary to carry out the visit. This will include a STEPS PowerPoint presentation (customisable), as well as material for the STEPS Egnineering Activity to do with the class. All the information on the visit will be covered at the training sessions.

Teachers will be guided on their role in the school visit, and their responsibility in Child Protection so you can rest assured that you will be at all time supported by the teacher.

A basic overview of the visit is as follows:
