Volunteer profile: Jim Geraghty

With over 400 schools registered for a free school visit from an engineer, we caught up with some of the volunteers to talk about why they volunteer to visit secondary schools.

What’s your name and how do you usually spend your days?       Jim Geraghty and I work as a Project Manager supporting R&D projects in a medical deceive company.

How and why did you get involved with STEPS?

To give something back and help inform the secondary school students about what awaits following an engineering qualification.

What type of volunteering have you done with the STEPS programme?

I visited Gort Secondary School to inform the leaving cert year about engineering.

Did the students participate and interact?
We had a really great interactive questions and answers type session where we discussed university, a day in the working life of an engineer, career options, and travel.

What is the best part of volunteering with STEPS so far?
The reward of having given something back. Career Guidance was lacking in the 90’s when I was in secondary school and I can play a part in improving this situation.

What advice/encouragement would you give to someone who's thinking of volunteering?  Go for it – what have you to lose.
What were you like as a student at school? Sport first – everything else second. Although I did manage to get the balance right in my leaving cert year to get the points required for Engineering!
