The STEPS Volunteer Programme is a nationwide community of volunteer engineers who inspire young people to enjoy and explore engineering.

Volunteering is a great way to give back. Yes, it is challenging - but it is very rewarding. And it is a fun way gain CPD credits!

The role of the STEPS Volunteer Engineer is to visit a 3rd or 4th class primary school class taking part in the STEPS Young Engineers Award. Engineers attend a training session in October (held nationwide), where they are given resources and guidance to carry out the school visit. School visits take place the last week in November.

STEPS has been awarded the 'Investing in Volunteers' certification - this is the gold standard for Volunteer Programes in the UK and Ireland.

The certification was re-accredited in 2019. STEPS is the only engineer-focused volunteering organisation to achieve this standard in Ireland.

Here are just some of the wonderful benefits of volunteering with STEPS

Volunteering with the STEPS Volunteer Programme is easy.

  1. Attend a Training Session (these take place in October nationwide)
  2. Fill out the online Application Form
  3. Choose a school to visit from the list
  4. We will put you in touch with the teacher to arrange the visit
  5. Visit the school on the last week in November

To Volunteer with the STEPS Volunteer Programme you must be:

  • A qualified engineer, studying engineering at third level, or currently employed in an engineering role
  • 18 years or older
  • Willing to attend a 2 hour STEPS training session in October
  • Available to visit a school during the school visit week in late November

All prospective STEPS Volunteers must complete a training session.

STEPS training typically takes place in various venues nationwide in October.
If you are interested in volunteering with STEPS - come along! - there is no obligation to sign up. The session lasts about 2hours and includes refreshments.

At the training session you will meet
fellow Volunteer Engineers from your area as well as a member of the STEPS Team .

The session will include:

  • Information on the STEPS Young Engineers Award
  • The role of the Volunteer Engineer at the school visit
  • The new STEPS resources and activities
  • Child protection
  • A Volunteer Pack

School visits take place late November

Volunteer Engineers typically carry out one class visit on the nominated visits week - but you are very welcome to carry out more than one! The more Volunteer visits, the more students who get to meet an Engineer Role Model.

School Visits last approx. 1-2 hrs.

You will have a teacher in the room with you at all times. Child protection is paramount at STEPS. You will be at all times supported by the teacher.

We understand that visiting class of young students is daunting! It is up to you if you would like to do your visit solo or in a group. If you would like we can match you with a fellow STEPS Volunteer Engineer. Whatever makes the experience more enjoyable for you!

All information on the school visits will be covered at the STEPS Training Sessions.

New for 2019

This year STEPS have designed brand new customised resources for the YEA school visit. Each Volunteer Engineer will receive a Volunteer Pack. This will include a new STEPS PowerPoint presentation (customisable), materials needed to carry out the new STEPS Egnineering Activities and some prizes for the students.

STEPS into Christmas!

Last year we had a fantastic STEPS Christmas party in Engineers Ireland Clyde Road.
